I was twenty-two. She was eighty-nine, and she had days left. She took my hand and said:

I nodded. I held her hand. I told myself it was the morphine.

Three days later, she was gone.

For the next fifteen years, every time I opened a Bible, I heard her voice. I'd be sitting in church during the sermon, and I'd hear it. I'd be praying at 2am, asking God to show up and feeling nothing, and I'd hear it.

I grew up in church. Sunday school, Wednesday night Bible study, youth group — the whole pipeline. I knew the books of the Bible by heart before I was eight years old. I read my Bible because I wanted to, not because I was told to.

And I prayed. For hours. Walking to school, before tests, when I was happy, when I was breaking apart.

Here's the thing nobody in church says out loud: I never felt anything. Not once. Not the "presence of God" they talked about from the pulpit. Not at altar calls, not at retreats, not in the prayer closet at 5am while everyone around me swore they could feel Him in the room.

For thirty-seven years, I assumed the problem was me. Not enough faith. Not enough fasting. Not enough something.

Last spring, at three in the morning, I couldn't sleep — again — and I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole. A video came up: a man sitting in his office, holding what looked like a massive, beautifully bound book.

He said something I had never heard in thirty-seven years inside the church:

I sat up straight.

He talked about a book that used to be considered scripture — quoted by Jesus's own disciples, read by the early church for hundreds of years. And then it vanished. Quietly. From every Bible in the West.

That book was the Book of Enoch.

Thirty-seven years in church. Christian college. I had read the Bible cover to cover three times. And I had never once heard the name Enoch.

There's an entire second collection — the Gnostic Gospels: the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, the Pistis Sophia, the Gospel of Judas, and over 30 other texts that were considered far too dangerous to leave inside any Western Bible.

I went looking for a single edition that included both — the complete Ethiopian canon and the full Gnostic collection. Most editions I found online had one or the other. A few claimed to have both, but were missing entire sections, used watered-down translations, or printed in type so small I needed a magnifying glass.

After weeks of comparing editions, I finally found one that had everything intact.
